March for Racial Justice 2017
Role: Cinematographer, Editor
In September, I covered the March for Racial Justice and March for Black Women in DC. Thousands of people turned out to join together with singing and speeches, and then took to the streets in peaceful protest, marching from Seward Square and Lincoln Park to the National Mall. The event took place on the 98th anniversary of the Elaine Massacre in Elaine Arkansas.
From the M4RJ website on the Elaine Massacre: "In 1919, over 100 black sharecroppers dared to organize themselves as the Progressive Farmers and Household Union of America to demand better pay from white plantation owners. In response, white mobs went on a state sanctioned killing spree. It is estimated that 100-240 black Americans were massacred at their hands. No one went to jail."
